This holistic massage, which literally translates as finger pressure, uses compression and stretching along Ki lines of the body to restore energetic balance. During your Shiatsu treatment
Your Shiatsu massage will be performed on a mat or futon on the floor. Wear loose fitting, long sleeved clothes and make sure you are comfortable with the temperature in the room. Your therapist will guide you through a series of supported postures or stretches using their thumbs, palms, knees and feet.
Your therapist will use their hands, arms and maybe even feet to apply pressure to points along your body. They may also pull you into stretches and poses to lengthen and release your muscles. The pressure of a Shiatsu massage can be deep, so you should let your therapist know about any concerns before they begin. No oils are used in this therapy.
After your Shiatsu massage
Take time to rest and relax and avoid intense physical activity until your body has had a chance to recover. Shiatsu is most effective after a few, regular treatments.
What is the difference between a Shiatsu and a Thai Yoga massage?
Shiatsu and Thai Yoga massage work with the same energy channels, but a Thai Yoga massage uses more of the body in each stretch. A Shiatsu massage may feel less physical and more relaxing, but is still more interactive than a classic treatment such as a Deep Tissue.
Does Shiatsu massage hurt?
Your therapist may use quite deep pressure at times, and you should always let them know if you’re experiencing discomfort.
