Should you try sound healing?

Sound has been used as healing a method in many cultures for centuries. From India to Australia and South America, countries around the world have utilised the power of sound as a tool to help relax and calm people. Now the ancient technique is becoming the newest trend to sweep London, as many are finding it a great way to tackle stress, depression and anxiety.

What exactly does sound healing do and how does it work?

Using tools like gongs, drums, Tibetan singing bowls, and tuning forks, sound healing aims to put listeners into a meditative state. By producing a stable rhythm and frequency that our brainwaves can entrain, the sound allows our brain to shift from its normal waking consciousness to a relaxed or meditative state, similar to a mantra you might repeat during a meditation class. Sometimes sound healing can even put you to sleep! Sound practitioners believe the body is made up of different energy frequencies, and think sound can also be used to rebalance and aligning our body’s energy.

Sound healing classes

During a typical sound healing class you’ll usually be asked to sit or lie on the floor and concentrate on your breath, to prepare your body to receive the sound. Then once you listen to the sounds you should begin to drop into a relaxed state. If you are attending a one-on-one session a sound practitioner may ask about any areas of concern you have in your body or on your mind, before creating sounds accordingly. Upon leaving a class you should feel more calm and relaxed if nothing else, but many who attend regular session have found it can help with stress-related illnesses as well as anxiety and depression.
