A pre-massage makeover for your home, in 5 simple steps

“I want a massage near me”, you think. Well, nowhere’s nearer than your own home. Combine spa skills with the comfort and convenience of being at home with these five speedy steps.

Studies by the National Center for Biotechnology Information suggest that massage therapy dissolves physical and mental tension – as anyone who’s drifted off to sleep under those gentle strokes can attest. Create the perfect stress-free setting for your visit from a mobile massage therapist with this pre-massage mini home makeover.

1. Tot up your towels

Before the day of your massage, make sure you have clean, soft towels ready for your masseuse to cover you with. You’ll need three or four – but use a nice large bath sheet to cover yourself, and your modesty.

2. Leave plenty of time

…or you’ll struggle to do any of the other tips! Your masseuse will also need some time to set up the massage table and wash their hands before getting started. Massage therapist Agnieszka says, “I’d expect to find the customer at home at least five minutes before their appointment. That way I can set up, and they have time to ask any questions.”

3. Clear the clutter

This isn’t just about creating a zen vibe – your masseuse will need enough space to put up their table. Find a big enough space, moving furniture to the side of the room if need be, so there’s space for the table and for your therapist to move around it without worrying about stepping on your stuff.

4. Turn up the beat

The best thing about having a massage at home rather than in a spa? Not a whiff of whale song (unless you’re a fan, that is). Music has been proven (in a study published in the journal of Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine) to have a relaxing effect that’s even more powerful accompanied by visualisation. Whether it’s classical strings or chilled-out house, have fun creating your own massage music playlist.

If you’re stuck for ideas, we’ve put together this playlist for you to enjoy with your massage. Playlist lasts for 60 minutes.

5. Spark some scents

Studies by Maryland University have suggested aromatherapy reduces stress, with fragrances like lavender being particularly effective. Light some candles or set up a diffuser with your favourite scent – and your masseuse can choose from their oils to give your full body massage a matching ‘scent-track’.
